Send, reply to, edit and search messages in Staff Chat

Send words, photos and files in a channel or a conversation, then reply, react, edit or delete your own messages, and search for an older one.

In a server, pick a channel on the left. A grade's channel opens on ALL, for the whole grade, with a tab for each subject beside it.

Send a message

  • Type in the box at the bottom and press Enter to send.
  • Select the paperclip to add photos or files: up to five on one message. In a free server, a direct message or a group, each can be up to 25 MB; a paid server's plan allows bigger files. Programs and web pages can't be sent.
  • Type @ to mention someone. A mention lights their orange dot even when they've muted everything but mentions.
  • A link in a message gets a preview card with the page's title and picture.

Reply, react, edit and delete

Point at a message to see its buttons; on a phone or tablet, tap it.

  • Reply puts a quote of the message above your answer.
  • The smiley face adds a reaction. Select a reaction again to take yours back.
  • In the three-dot menu, Edit message changes your words. Everybody sees (edited) after them.
  • Delete message removes it for everybody, and Message deleted stays in its place. A school's admins can Remove message on anybody's message in that school.

Photos and files

Select a photo to see it full size. Select a file to open it: PDFs, videos, recordings and pictures open right in the chat, and anything else downloads. Download saves a copy. If you have a Filing Cabinet, the folder button beside a file copies it there: pick a folder and select Add Here.

Search

Select the magnifier at the top of a channel to search it and every tab of it you can open, or at the top of a conversation to search that conversation. Type at least 2 letters: whole words and the start of a word are found. Select a result to jump to it. For an older message, Back to the newest takes you back.

Good to know

Only people in the chat can open its photos and files, and a link to one copied out of the app stops working within minutes. A channel with a lock isn't one of yours: when Let teachers browse all channels is off, you can open #general and the channels of the grades and subjects you teach. Ask an admin to add you to another.
