Message a colleague or a group in Staff Chat

Message any teacher by email, or start a group. An orange dot says something is waiting, and you can mute a conversation or block a person.

  1. In Staff Chat, select the speech bubbles at the top left for your Direct Messages, or Start a DM if you have no server yet.
  2. Select the plus button to start a new conversation.
  3. Search a colleague by name, or type any teacher's email address. They don't have to share a server with you.
  4. Pick one person and select Message with their name, or pick several, give the group a name if you like, and select Create group.

A group can have up to 10 people. While someone types in a conversation, the others see their name and "is typing" above the box.

Know what's waiting

An orange dot means a message is waiting: beside Staff Chat in the menu, on a server or Direct Messages at the left, and on each channel, tab and conversation. Opening it clears the dot. A school that invited you keeps its dot until you accept or decline. Staff Chat messages never go in the notification bell; invitations and announcements do.

With Message sounds on, a new direct or group message, or a mention of you, plays a soft sound while the app is open.

Mute or block

  • In a conversation's three-dot menu, choose Mute everything, or Mute except @mentions to hear only when you're mentioned. Unmute turns it back on.
  • The bell beside a server's name mutes the whole server the same two ways.
  • Block with their name, in the same menu, hides their messages and stops them messaging you, inviting you to a school or sharing a planner with you. Unblock undoes it, there or in Block list at the bottom of Privacy & Notifications.
  • Delete conversation removes it from your list.

Tip

Don't want direct messages at all? Turn off Allow direct messages in Privacy & Notifications. See Choose which notifications you get.
