Run your Staff Chat server: roles, members and settings

A server's admins give roles, decide who opens which channels, remove members and change its grades and subjects. Its owner can hand it on.

Select the gear beside the server's name to open Server Settings. It has four tabs: General, Channels, Members and Plan.

Roles

  • Owner: whoever made the server, or was handed it. Always an admin.
  • Admin: invites, gives roles, posts on every board and removes messages and members.
  • Board poster: posts on the boards of their own grades and subjects.
  • No role: everybody else, which is how everyone joins.

In Members, select the role menu on a person's row to change their role, or Remove from server. Edit beside their grades and subjects changes what they teach; after joining, only an admin can change it.

Who opens which channels

In General, Let teachers browse all channels decides it. On, everyone opens every channel. Off, each teacher opens #general and the channels of the grades and subjects they teach, and sees the others with a lock. Admins open everything either way.

Grades, subjects and storage

  • Channels adds or removes grades and subjects. Removing one deletes its channel's messages and board for good.
  • Plan shows the server's plan and its Server storage, which holds the photos and files sent on the server. Turn on Clear the oldest files when it's full to make room for new ones automatically.

Leaving, handing over and deleting

  • Anyone but the owner can leave: select Members at the bottom of the channel list, then Leave server.
  • The owner hands the server to another admin with Hand it over in Server Settings, Members. For a paid server, that admin needs a Staff Chat plan of their own that holds everyone.
  • An admin deletes the server from General: select Delete Server, type its name, then Delete Forever. It's gone for everyone, and can't be brought back.

Good to know

A removed member's messages stay, and they can be invited again. Nobody is emailed when they're removed.
