Deploy the desktop app on school computers (for IT)
For a school's IT team: install the Windows app for each user so it keeps itself up to date, or install it for the whole computer and update it yourselves.
This page is for the IT team at a school. The Windows app is built to install for one user at a time and keep itself up to date, with no administrator rights. How you deploy it decides whether it can.
Recommended: install it for each user
- Download One Stop Teacher Shop Setup.exe from the download page. It is signed by One Stop Teacher Shop, Inc.
- Deploy it in the user's context, not the device's. In Intune, add it as a Windows app (Win32) and set its install behavior to User. The install command is "One Stop Teacher Shop Setup.exe" /S.
- It installs into the user's own %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\one-stop-desktop folder with no administrator prompt, and adds Start menu and desktop shortcuts.
- To detect it, check that %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\one-stop-desktop\One Stop Teacher Shop.exe exists. Don't check a version: the app updates itself, and a version rule would install it again.
From then on the app updates itself quietly in the background, like any per-user app, and nothing needs deploying again.
If AppLocker or App Control is on
Allow programs signed by the publisher One Stop Teacher Shop, Inc. One publisher rule covers the app and every update, which downloads into the user's %LOCALAPPDATA% folder and runs from there. A rule that only allows Program Files blocks both.
If you would rather control versions yourselves
Install it for the whole computer, as SYSTEM, into Program Files: "One Stop Teacher Shop Setup.exe" /S /D=C:\Program Files\One Stop Teacher Shop. The /D= part must come last, without quotes.
- That copy doesn't update itself, and doesn't install a second copy either. When a newer version is out, the app says Your school keeps this app up to date, and teachers can use the planner in a web browser in the meantime.
- Deploy each new version the same way, as SYSTEM, while nobody is using the app.
- Add your own Start menu shortcut. A SYSTEM install puts its shortcuts in the SYSTEM profile, where teachers don't see them.
- Remove it as SYSTEM too, with Uninstall One Stop Teacher Shop.exe /S from that folder. Run from a teacher's account, the uninstaller looks for that teacher's own copy instead.
Before you do this
Don't install it into Program Files from a teacher's own account, for example from a window that teacher opened with Run as administrator. That copy can't update itself, and installing over it fails until an administrator uninstalls it.
Good to know
Teachers' planners are saved in their accounts, not on the computer, so there is nothing to back up and nothing is lost by reinstalling.
